What is PrEP?

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a pill for people who do not have HIV and want added ongoing protection. It is available by prescription only, and must be taken every day – like birth control but for HIV prevention. While PrEP is highly effective in preventing HIV, it does not protect against other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Condoms protect against most other STDs, as well as HIV and pregnancy.
